The cruel god

This is a cruel god.

Millions of us try to curry favour with the god through performance.

We do as we think the god desires, but have no way of knowing because the god never proclaims what is expected.

Just when we think we know, the god changes the rules and those who were in favour now flounder in the shadows.

This is the god of algorithms.

Social media is wild, isn’t it? If your friend were in a relationship with someone who changed their mind on  a whim, blew hot and cold and never explained their thinking, you’d tell them to run a mile.

Yet here we are, trying to appease the god of algorithms.

Why?

It’s an interesting case study in behaviour.

  • Fear of being left out.
  • Desire for social status.
  • Immediate gratification.

And importantly, intermittent rewards.

Just like the pokies, we never quite know when we’re going to hit the jackpot, so we keep trying.
I can’t help you with SEO, search terms and hashtags. The algorithm god remains a mystery to me.

But I can tell you that people want to feel better about themselves and be entertained.

That includes your customers and your colleagues.
